Call to Action: Open Letter to tenants of the Loom

I was actively looking forward to joining your ranks and working with you, offering ways to benefit from my being there and using the  professional and artistic services you all offer. I came and personally introduced myself to many of you, and discussed some exciting possibilities.

You may have heard about the Looms decision to reject our lease after accepting 3 months rent + security because of the subject matter of some of our work and clientelle affiliation with glbt and sexuality being a violation of the owners religious beliefs. I was surprised also because of the nature and content of Gnostic,  Silky’s, the occult programming in Kave space and the affiliation Tomahawk has with the fetish and porn community, where one of my own staff now works part time.

The response of the owners was appalling. I couldn’t believe what they said. Recently,  I’ve discovered that they receive public funding making their discrimination policy that much worse. I am in touch with city council and several newspapers have scheduled interviews with me.

There has been huge community backlash against the loom already, but I’m hoping b that residents like yourself will be equally outraged and will let the management know they do not agree with their policy, that we do in fact fit in and they wanted us there, and regardless of whether they change their mind I hope this puts pressure on them.  I can’t believe this bigotry could win. Please, let them know the reality of your business and that it is not Ok.

We work with major clients,  from Vogue to Beyoncé to Broadway. WE BRING IN many clients weekly already, from all over the world and would have promoted the space eagerly. It’s atrocious that our affiliation with glbtq should disqualify us for religious reasons.

The concern I have is that businesses like yours will be harmed in this process and I believe by speaking out you set the record straight and can make real change.

So please, let the owners and management know you won’t be complicit in their hate and be vocal so that the community knows you don’t share the views of the management. http://www.shopsattheloom.com

It’s official, after accepting my application, and in person interview, and 3 months rent +1 security, the lease was vetoed by one investor at the loom because he believed the nature of my business too sexual for the chabbad and Hasidic community for which he decides.

This is important, not just because it affects me but because this space is branding itself as an artist space, demanding a huge amount of financial commitment from artists, requires tenants to brand all of their media with The Loom and discriminates against businesses, based on insubstantial and religiously based reasoning.

Spread the word. We have a choice not to let this become the local destination. These people are interested in using the classic art studio model for increasing property values and have no interest in creating an actually artistic free expression space: DON’T LET THEM PROFIT FROM A MISCONCEPTION!

KLAWTEX is Hiring!!

Over the past year KLAWTEX has been expanding at a very fast pace, this year alone we’ve been featured in several mainstream and fetish fashion magazines, been on Fashion Week runways as well as among Lifestyle BDSM event and Rubber World headliners.

So we need more staff! The staff is currently 4 people large and we are looking for some of the same and some new positions.

We are hiring full and part time, sub-contracted and employed:

1) Pattern Makers (experience required: relevant college degree or 2 years experience)

2) Studio Assistants (experience required: 1 year of experience, portfolio evaluation; or intern to hire acceptable)

3) Clothing Makers (paid training!) (Prior academic or professional clothing making experience preferred, but not necessary. Candidates with skills in clothing making or latex clothing making may receive priority and higher compensation.)

4) Office/Business Manager (experience required: office assistant or manager for 1 year, or 3+ years in a junior level position in a creative field: gallery, artist studio)

An ideal person will have a background in either fashion, design, craft or art, with some experience working in a multiple person studio environment. Having an interest in and experience costuming for performance art, theatre and film is a plus.

For the office manager, tasks will include inventory, book keeping, client relations, and familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, and basic web platforms preferred. An ideal candidate will be interested in both aspects of the business, the office and the studio and will want to be able to work in both.

All of the positions are PAID, and have room for advancement.

Interviews will take place beginning March 26th 2012 and will close April 5 2012. Applications must be received no later than March 25th.

Latex Care How To

LATEX CARE

Latex rubber is a natural material that is, like you, constantly biodegrading.  However, if you follow these care guidelines, you can prolong the life and strength of your latex.

AVOID:

  • Oils, greases and solvents, they destroy latex.  Absolutely do not ever use vegetable or mineral oil, Crisco, Vaseline, hand creams and moisturizers, oil based lubes like Elbow Grease,  and leather goods (leather contains oils).
  • Exposure to fluctuating or extreme temperatures, and especially prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Copper, brass, and bronze, including loose change, can stain latex, especially the lighter colors.
  • Sharp objects, like fingernails and jewelry.
  • Fire, like candles, cigarettes, or other open flames. Latex is flammable!

 

WEARING IT:

Rule of thumb: Put it on like stockings, take it off like a condom.

When dressing use talcum powder or silicone lubricant (I recommend Pjur, also great for shining, and for sexytime).  Powder is easier when getting dressed alone, but makes a bit of a mess.

Never tug or pull the latex with your fingers.  If you must make an adjustment, pull very gently along seams or zippers as they are stronger, and use your flat palm along panels of latex to shift it into place.

POLISHING:
For a high shine I recommend silicone lube like Pjur or spray like Black Beauty, apply liberally and then rub in circles with hands or buff with a soft cloth, like an old t-shirt.  I caution against Armor All because it contains petroleum.
CLEANING :
Wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of unscented/uncolored soap or baby shampoo. Rinse well, inside and out  and hang to dry. Do not iron, dry-clean, or put latex garments into a washing machine or dryer.

STORING:
After washing and once completely dry, lightly powder with talcum powder, and keep it in a cool dark place. It is best not to fold latex because it will crease, unless you wear the item often. Store in a vented plastic bag, or an old cotton pillowcase or on clear plastic, padded or wooden hangers.  It is best not to store your latex saturated in silicone, as it can cause the latex to stick too much to itself.
REPAIR:
Holes, tears, zippers and seams can often be repaired for much less than the cost of a new garment.  Please contact KLAWTEX for Purple Passion to discuss repairing your latex, and bring this page for 10% off your repair! I have 2 new classes coming up at Purple Passion…well 3 if you include the one sold out in December!

First class is January 26:

Intermediate Latex Clothing Making: Miniskirts and Boxer Briefs (Max 6 people!!)

In this class we will each make either a sleek sexy miniskirt or a pair of shorts with room for a package! These items will be staples in your latex wardrobe, customized to fit you just right, with a zipper for easy dressing and strength. We begin by measuring, then you’ll learn how to alter a pattern to your shape, cut and piece latex with these sexy but demanding curves, reinforce your edges and then you’ll learn how to prepare and add zippers to your latex pattern. Class size is limited to 6 people, all materials are included– keep what you make!

Latex Clothing Making: Booty Short Boot Camp (Max 10 people!!)

In this class we will focus on one basic latex staple: the booty short. With modifications for all bodies we will each customize a shorts pattern and create a pair of booty shorts for our latex wardrobes. Class size limited to 10, all materials included, keep what you make!

 

The latex classes have been so much fun and Ive seen several of my students wearing their garments around the city, and thanks to the strictly limited class size, we are able to focus hands on and really create a garment you’ll love to keep for ever!
